KARACHI – President Pervez Musharraf inaugurating the Pakistan Navy Sports Gala here on Friday late evening at Marina Club advised Navy to spearhead the movement to develop water sports in the country.
He announced a donation of Rs one million for water sports on the occasion. He also congratulated the Commander Coast, Event Management Company Koncepts Unlimited and City District Government Karachi, for joining hands to organise the event and look forward the support of all the relevant departments and organisations for the great success of the Gala.
He also asked Sindh Governor Dr Ishrat-ul-Ebad Khan and City Nazim Syed Mustafa Kamal who were also present on the occasion, to encourage water sports.
The president emphasised the need for encouraging water sports in the country.
He described water sports as one of the most relaxing and pleasurable sports possible. He also pointed out that in the past years, our country was good in many of the sports. “We have gone down in all these events so much so that we need to put on extra efforts to improve our standards at the Asia level, South Asian Federation Games level and then obviously at the Olympics level”, he said.
“We have to put on a lot of effort to make this possible”, the President remarked.
He recalled, “Many years ago we had evolved a sports strategy where we thought about the need to facilitate sports in every district and then ensuring that the joining of the schools and colleges in the events of sports”.
